White Church of Karan

NEWS

The White Church in the village Karan near Užice, dedicated to the Annunciation, was built in the fourth decade of the 14th century and then decorated with frescoes by means of župan Petar Brajan, lord of King Dušan, with his family. Several other donors joined him in this endeavor, but there is no other information about them, as well as about Brajan and his family, apart from the portrait in this church.
The modest-sized church, single-nave, with a dome and three bays, today is slightly obscured by the chancel, which was added later. Its exterior has simple shapes and no decorations, and it is plastered and painted white. Inside the church, the architecture seems more complex and creates the impression that the church is much bigger and higher than it looks from the outside, which is also contributed by the painting and the significantly lowered floor level.
